Advanced Courses At Expo: College & Career Readiness

 

Dear Parent/Guardian,


We want to tell you about special advanced classes that we offer at Explorations Academy High School. These classes can help your child learn more, build important skills and get ready for the future.


Why Take Advanced Courses?

Students in advanced classes:

  •         Learn harder and more interesting lessons.
  •         Get better at thinking and solving problems.
  •         Feel more confident about themselves.
  •         Show they are ready for college.
  •         May earn college credit before they finish high school.
  •         May spend less time and money in college.

Course Name

Description

Prerequisites and How Students Are Selected

AP English:

Literature & Composition

Advanced literature and composition course, that includes college level reading and literary analysis. 

12

Must have taken an passed English 9-11 and the English Regents 

AP Biology

Advanced level biology and life sciences study. 

11 & 12

Must have taken and passed 3 years of science and at least one science Regents. 

AP African American Studies


Advanced history course that explores connections between art, history, government, and literature.

Must have taken and passed 3 years of social studies and at least one history Regents. 

AP Computer Science


An introductory, college-level computing course designed for high school students to explore the creative, practical, and social aspects of technology, rather than just programming.

Must have taken and passed two years of computer science courses leading up to this course within our computer science sequence. 

AP Spanish Literature & Culture

The AP Spanish Literature and Culture course takes a thematic approach to the introduction and study of literary texts from Peninsular Spanish, Latin American, and United States Hispanic literature. 

11 & 12

Must have taken and passed at least two semesters of Spanish and the Spanish Regents. 

AP United States History 

A college-level survey course focusing on American history from 1491 to the present, covering nine thematic units.

Must have taken and passed three years of social studies and at least one social studies Regents. 

Bard Seminar:

Bard College

A four semester, interdisciplinary humanities course totaling 12 Bard College credits 

11 & 12

Must have taken and passed two years of social studies and English courses and a desire to participate in college level discourse and reading, literary analysis, and writing. 

 

If you would like your child to participate in any of these courses, please talk to a school counselor or administrator. They will be happy to explain the programming process and help your student choose the right classes.


Help for Student in Advanced Classes:

We offer help so all students can do well in these classes such as:

Weekly tutoring opportunities before and after school. 

Financial help: The school pays for any costs related to these advanced classes.
